Giacomo’s Story: The Path to Confidence and Giving Back
Italy
Giacomo is only 23 years old, but his journey with our partner Fondazione di Liegro began five years ago, when he first participated in their art therapy workshop, on the recommendation of a public mental health centre.
Giacomo joined the foundation’s music workshop and immediately demonstrated remarkable vocal and instrumental skills. However, his behavior was often overbearing, marked by aggressive communication, intrusiveness, and falsehoods. At times, he tried to appear more confident by masking his insecurities.
As Giacomo continued to participate in the workshops, he gradually became more positive and self-assured. A pivotal moment came when the workshop coordinator recognized Giacomo’s potential and appointed him as the lead singer for the foundation’s end-of-year concerts. This role not only boosted his self-esteem but also served as inspiration for others who were navigating their own mental health journeys.
Over the years, several young people have joined the foundation’s workshops because of Giacomo, who has shown an innate desire to help others. In fact, Giacomo has participated in two editions of the training course, “Volunteers and Families Network for Mental Health,” organized annually by the foundation, and says that his greatest aspiration is to give back by volunteering.
Giacomo’s story exemplifies the transformative impact of the Fondazione di Liegro’s programs, demonstrating how the therapeutic power of art and community support can help individuals overcome challenges, grow, and pursue their dreams.
